ADNOC and Mitsubishi have joined the Baytown mega-project (Texas, USA), which is led by ExxonMobil and aims to produce 900,000 tons of CCS-based hydrogen annually, with some of it designated for ammonia production. JERA, SK Inc., and Air Liquide are also part of the project, with JERA and SK Inc. securing commitments for low-emission ammonia, intended for transport to Asia for power generation. A final investment decision (FID) is anticipated in 2025, with production set to start in 2029.
ADNOC will acquire a 35% equity stake in Baytown, while Mitsubishi and Exxon continue discussions for a formal offtake and equity agreement. Mitsubishi's strategy for low-emission ammonia imports to Japan involves redeveloping the Namikata terminal, an existing LPG hub in southern Japan, with plans to enable it to manage 1 million tons of ammonia imports annually by 2030.
