Lingen, Germany. Bilfinger, an international provider of industrial services, has secured a contract as part of a consortium to carry out the prefabrication, assembly, and installation of plant components for bp’s new green hydrogen electrolyzer. With a planned capacity of 100 megawatts, the facility is set to become bp’s largest green hydrogen project to date and the first electrolyzer plant to be fully owned and operated by the company.

Upon completion, the plant is expected to produce up to 11,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, with commissioning scheduled for 2027. The facility will operate exclusively on electricity generated from renewable energy sources. The hydrogen produced will be supplied to industrial customers via a connection to the hydrogen core network and will also be used at the adjacent refinery to manufacture lower-carbon fuels.

Drawing on its extensive experience in hydrogen projects, Bilfinger is responsible for a broad scope of work, including the prefabrication, assembly, and installation of piping and plant equipment, thermal and cryogenic insulation, and HVAC systems. During peak construction phases, more than 200 Bilfinger specialists are expected to be deployed on site.

A Bilfinger spokesperson noted that the collaboration with bp represents an important step in advancing Germany’s hydrogen infrastructure and aligns with the company’s strategic goal of supporting customers in improving efficiency and sustainability.

Beyond this bp project, Bilfinger is also actively involved in additional initiatives aimed at positioning the city of Lingen as one of Germany’s leading hydrogen hubs.
