Envision has commissioned the ‘world’s largest’ green hydrogen and ammonia plant in Chifeng, China, powered entirely by an off-grid renewable energy system.

The Chinese wind turbine giant described it as the world’s “largest and most advanced” green hydrogen and ammonia facility, with the plant using AI to provide real-time optimisation and stability.

The plant in the Chifeng Net Zero Industrial Park is now producing 320,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually from 500MW of electrolysis, with plans to begin exporting the compound in Q4.

Japan’s Marubeni has already inked a long-term offtake agreement for a portion of the plant’s output for use in fertilisers, chemicals and shipping.

A statement by Envision said the off-grid renewable system converts surplus power to liquid nitrogen within an air separation unit, with the electrolysers responding to energy intermittency.

Furthermore, the facility was awarded Bureau Veritas Renewable Ammonia Certification, confirming its compliance with strict green hydrogen production standards, including the EU’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin.

By 2028, the company plans to scale up the plant to produce 1.5 million tonnes of green ammonia per year, representing over 2.5GW of electrolyser capacity.
