On October 18, 2023, China's pioneering hydrogen-driven vessel, named Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat No 1, successfully concluded its inaugural journey in Yichang, Hubei province. This achievement represents a significant advancement in applying hydrogen fuel cell technology to inland watercraft. In contrast to conventional fuel-propelled ships, this innovative vessel is anticipated to conserve 103 metric tons of fuel and curtail annual carbon dioxide emissions by 343 tons.
The vessel, a three-tiered craft, features a steel-aluminum composite structure with dimensions of 49.9 meters in length and 10.4 meters in width. It possesses an impressive 500kw output power and can cover a distance of 200 kilometers on a single charge. Following its delivery, the ship will serve various purposes, including transportation, inspections, and emergency operations within the Three Gorges region.
This maiden voyage signifies a groundbreaking stride towards harnessing hydrogen energy along the Yangtze River, symbolizing a noteworthy accomplishment in the eco-friendly and low-carbon evolution of inland river transport in China.
