Dutch logistics provider Samskip and Indian shipbuilder Cochin Shipyard have initiated the construction of a groundbreaking, hydrogen-powered shortsea container vessel, named Samskip SeaShuttle. The event officially signifies the commencement of the manufacturing process for this innovative zero-emission shortsea container ship, set to be the first in the world to utilize green hydrogen as its primary fuel source.

Each of the 135-meter ships will be equipped with a 3.2 MW hydrogen fuel cell, complemented by diesel generators for backup purposes. The anticipated reduction of approximately 25,000 tons of CO2 per year in zero-emission mode underlines the environmental benefits of the hydrogen-powered SeaShuttle. Furthermore, Samskip emphasized the vessels' commitment to achieving zero-emission operations in ports by utilizing green shore power at the designated ports of call. The delivery of these groundbreaking vessels is scheduled for the third and fourth quarters of 2025.

Recognizing the significance of this milestone, Samskip hosted "The Samskip Sustainability Day" on February 29. This collaborative forum brought together maritime experts, municipal representatives, customers, politicians, and suppliers to discuss and present ideas on sustainable logistics. With 150 guests in Rotterdam and 60 in Oslo, the event emphasized the necessity for collaboration and innovative approaches in the evolving era of sustainable transportation.
