Hörmann Vehicle Engineering has introduced an innovative hydrogen storage solution by integrating tanks directly into tractor wheels. A ring-shaped carbon-fiber tank built into the rim is designed to withstand pressures of up to 700 bar (in line with the ECE R134 standard) and can store up to 42 kg of hydrogen in the rear wheels. This is roughly equivalent to 200 liters of diesel fuel, enabling a full day of operation without refueling. The tank is also protected by a special cover that shields it from dirt and stones.
The technology can be used in tractors with hydrogen internal combustion engines as well as in fuel cell-powered vehicles with electric drives. Its advantages include efficient use of space, improved off-road mobility, and reduced CO₂ emissions when using green hydrogen. In the future, farmers may also be able to produce hydrogen on-site, for example using biogas systems.
In addition, for fuel cell vehicles, the company has developed a combined concept: hydrogen storage integrated into the wheels paired with a robust electric drivetrain. This highly integrated solution ensures efficient energy supply and enables compact, modular vehicle designs.
