Hafnia, in collaboration with joint venture partner 'Socatra of France,' has finalized an order for four newbuilds of 49,800 DWT dual-fuel methanol chemical IMOII medium-range (MR) ships. These vessels are scheduled to be constructed at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China. This announcement, made on August 8th, signifies Hafnia's first foray into investing in dual-fuel methanol vessels.
Earlier this year, Hafnia received two of its four LNG dual-fuel LR2 product tankers, the Hafnia Languedoc and Hafnia Loire, which are under time charter to TotalEnergies. The remaining two vessels, also in construction at GSI, are anticipated to be delivered by 2024.
Hafnia highlighted the growing traction of eco-friendly methanol-fueled vessels, underlining methanol's role as a cleaner marine fuel with a future-oriented and validated net-zero trajectory. Among the four newbuilds, three are expected to be delivered in 2025, with the fourth set for delivery in 2026. All four ships are secured through time-charter agreements with TotalEnergies' shipping division CSSA for a multi-year period.
