Ohmium, a company based in the US but focused on India, has opened a new 2GW gigafactory near Bengaluru, India, almost three years after announcing the plan. Ohmium makes unique hyper modular PEM electrolysers. The company, headquartered in California, already has a global project pipeline of over 2GW across three continents, though it's unclear how many of these are firm orders.

This new factory gives Ohmium one of the largest electrolyser manufacturing capacities in the world. However, according to Indian consultancy VNZ Insights, the company is not among the top ten globally for orders, raising questions about how much of the 2GW capacity will be used soon. Despite this, Time magazine ranked Ohmium second among America's top green-tech companies.

The new factory covers about 14,000 square meters and is designed to produce and ship 2GW of fully assembled and tested electrolysers to meet global demand. Ohmium's chief operating officer, Ashwin Varma, explained that their electrolysers are designed for mass production and easy assembly, offering high performance at competitive costs. The factory can quickly scale up to 4GW of annual manufacturing capacity.

Ohmium's electrolysers are modular and can be easily stacked, reducing installation and maintenance costs. Their design allows for rapid scaling from megawatts to gigawatts and is ideal for pairing with renewable electricity. In March, Ohmium received over 2 billion rupees ($24 million) in subsidies for manufacturing electrolysers in India.
