Hyundai, Kia, and Gore Pioneer Advances in Fuel Cell Technology

Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Corporation, and WL Gore & Associates have united their efforts in a collaborative initiative aimed at developing an innovative polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) for hydrogen fuel cell systems. The formalization of this groundbreaking partnership at the Mabuk Eco-Friendly R&D Center in Korea signifies a substantial stride towards enhancing the performance and sustainability of fuel cell-powered electric commercial vehicles.

Central to this joint venture is the advancement of a state-of-the-art PEM, a crucial element in hydrogen fuel cells responsible for facilitating the movement of protons between electrodes. This process prevents the direct fusion of hydrogen and oxygen gases and generates an electric current to power the vehicle. The efficacy of fuel cell systems heavily relies on the performance and durability of this PEM technology.

Drawing on a collaborative history spanning over 15 years, Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Gore collectively contribute a wealth of experience to the collaboration. The partnership aims to capitalize on their combined expertise to develop an optimized fuel cell system tailored specifically for commercial vehicles, with a focus on improving both performance and sustainability.

Delaware-based Gore, renowned as an advanced materials specialist, brings a unique skill set to the collaboration, emphasizing expertise in PEM, catalytic membranes, and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) technology.
