India’s 7GW Green Hydrogen Project to Supply Ammonia for First Large-Scale Green Urea Plant
Industry newsUnder the agreement, NGEL will provide Green Ammonia, captured CO₂, renewable power, and supporting utilities to Assago, enabling the production of Green Urea using clean, renewable inputs. The collaboration is intended to accelerate India’s shift toward sustainable fertilizer manufacturing while advancing the Atma Nirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision.
Addressing India’s Urea Dependence
India’s annual urea consumption stands at approximately 35–40 million tonnes, with 8–10 million tonnes met through imports. This reliance exposes the country to price volatility, foreign exchange outflows, geopolitical supply risks, and high carbon emissions associated with conventional fertilizer production.
The NGEL–Assago partnership directly addresses these challenges by establishing India’s first domestically integrated Green Urea value chain, fully powered by renewable hydrogen and green ammonia.
Advancing Indigenous Green Urea Production
The Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub is planned with a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per annum of green chemicals, including Green Methanol, Green Ammonia, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and Green Urea. Assago Industries will be among the first private-sector companies in India to produce Green Urea at scale using renewable ammonia and captured CO₂, marking a significant milestone in sustainable fertilizer manufacturing.
Key Benefits of the NGEL–Assago Partnership
• Enhanced self-reliance in fertilizer production
• Significant decarbonization of the fertilizer value chain
• Strengthening of Andhra Pradesh’s Green Hydrogen ecosystem
• Strong alignment with national sustainability and energy priorities
Assago Industries Statement
“This collaboration represents a major step in India’s journey toward sustainable fertilizer production. By manufacturing indigenous Green Urea from renewable feedstocks, Assago is proud to support India’s objectives of self-reliance, decarbonization, and agricultural resilience. We are excited to work with NGEL to create a world-class green chemicals ecosystem at Pudimadaka,” said Ashish Gurnani, Managing Director, Assago Industries Pvt. Ltd.
