Lhyfe opens Germany’s largest commercial renewable hydrogen site
Industry newsLhyfe has inaugurated Germany’s largest commercial renewable hydrogen production site in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg.
The one-hectare facility operates with an installed capacity of 10 MW and can produce up to 4 tons of green hydrogen per day through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy. That volume can fuel about 100 trucks daily over 400 km without CO₂ emissions. Power supply is secured through PPAs with producers including EDPR.
The plant will supply mobility operators such as H2 MOBILITY, as well as industries in sectors like steel, glass, and chemicals. It may also support the planned H2-Aspen industrial zone.
The €6.4 million project received funding from Baden-Württemberg and the EU’s European Regional Development Fund as part of the “H2-Wandel” initiative. Lhyfe, present in Germany since 2020, already operates a hydrogen logistics network with 70 high-capacity trailers.
The containerized and modular design of the site integrates all production and distribution steps, from water treatment and electrolysis to hydrogen purification, compression, and filling. Tube trailers can collect full containers directly from the site for distribution to customers across the region.
