Queretaro marked a milestone for Mexico’s clean energy transition this week with the inauguration of the country’s first green hydrogen plant, and one of the first of its kind in Latin America. Opened on Oct. 8 to coincide with International Hydrogen Day, the facility represents a MX$100 million investment and aims to cut carbon emissions, strengthen the circular economy, and advance technologies that could shape the country’s energy future.

The project was made possible through a partnership between German company Gerresheimer and Mexican gas producer Cryoinfra. According to Del Prete, the plant will allow Gerresheimer to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 100t annually.

Cryoinfra, which operates nationwide, chose Queretaro for its business-friendly environment and commitment to sustainability. The plant will run entirely on renewable energy, solar and wind, aligning with the state’s efforts to distinguish itself as a hub for clean technology.

For Gerresheimer, one of the largest healthcare packaging manufacturers in the Americas, the project reflects a broader shift toward sustainable industrial practices.
