Poland’s first hydrogen train set for passenger trials in August

The SM42-6Dn locomotive, developed by Bydgoszcz-based manufacturer PESA, is designed to replace diesel engines on non-electrified rail lines.

Powered by hydrogen fuel cells and batteries, the train offers a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to building new overhead electric infrastructure.

If successful, the locomotive could enter regular service with Lower Silesian Railways (Koleje Dolnośląskie), with further deployment possible in other regions across Poland.

The trial run, conducted in partnership with PESA, will allow passengers to experience the hydrogen locomotive, which can reach speeds of up to 90 km/h.

Hydrogen-powered trains are already in operation in countries including Germany, France and Italy.
