Rehlko, formerly Kohler Energy, has joined forces with Toyota Motor North America to create and install a hydrogen-powered fuel cell system at a hospital in Goldendale, Washington.

The 100 kW Solid Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell will provide Klickitat Valley Health (KVH), a prominent non-profit healthcare provider, with emergency backup power, peak shaving, and demand response capabilities.

This project aligns with Rehlko’s commitment to sustainability, aimed at reducing environmental impact across its operations and helping clients shrink their carbon footprints. By combining hydrogen with oxygen to generate electricity and heat, these fuel cells produce only water vapor as a byproduct, significantly lowering CO₂ emissions.

Rehlko delivered the fuel cell as a fully optimized, turnkey solution, assuming comprehensive responsibility for the system’s design, manufacturing, and integration, including electrical architecture, exhaust, cooling, and fuel intake. Collaborating with a local energy service firm, Rehlko oversaw the system’s installation and commissioning and will continue to provide a complete range of aftercare services.

Ben Rapp, Rehlko’s Business Development Manager, highlighted the company’s “one-source responsibility,” ensuring seamless component interoperability for dependable, on-demand power with low maintenance and reduced lifecycle costs.

KVH chose Rehlko for its expertise in end-to-end solutions. Jonathan Lewis, Director of Support Services at KVH, noted, “Rehlko’s knowledge and experience made them an ideal partner to meet our sustainable power needs.”

The fuel cell system serves a wide array of mission-critical power needs, from hospitals and data centers to water treatment facilities and remote applications like microgrids, shore power, and EV charging.

“This capability marks a major step forward in decarbonization for our customers and strengthens our efforts toward a more environmentally responsible future,” stated Charles Hunsucker, President of Power Systems at Rehlko.
