Trina Hydrogen initiated the construction of its inaugural 1.5GW ALK electrolyser production facility in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province on November 28th. The total investment for this plant is projected to amount to approximately Rmb 700 million ($100 million), demonstrating a significant commitment to the advancement of hydrogen technology.

This facility is designed to manufacture crucial components of ALK electrolyser, undertake the assembly process, and conduct electrolyser testing. The initial production capacity is set at 200 units annually, equivalent to 1.5GW. Trina Hydrogen anticipates the plant to reach full operational capacity by June 2024, positioning the company as a key player in the burgeoning green hydrogen ecosystem.

Despite appearing as a newcomer in the field, Trina Hydrogen has swiftly established itself as a formidable competitor. The company introduced its 1000Nm3/hr ALK electrolyser by the close of 2022. Notably, Trina Hydrogen's strength is bolstered by its association with Trina Solar, a well-regarded entity founded in 1997. Trina Solar is primarily involved in the research, development, production, and sales of PV modules, shipping an impressive 43GW of solar modules in 2022 and ranking third globally, following Longi and Jinko Solar.

A discernible trend in China's PV sector is the recent influx of companies venturing into the electrolyser domain. Longi Hydrogen, established in March 2021, has already built a 1.5GW electrolyser manufacturing capacity and plans to expand to 5GW within three years. Additionally, Sungrow Power, a prominent PV inverter leader, entered the electrolyser sector in 2022, commencing construction of its 1.5GW electrolyser production facility on the same day as Trina Hydrogen.

Before 2021, China's domestic electrolyser market was monopolized by three long-standing companies: Peric Hydrogen, Cockerill Jingli, and Tianjing Mainland Hydrohgen Equipment. However, the landscape has transformed since 2020, with green hydrogen emerging as a pivotal component of the energy transition. Numerous Chinese companies, including major players in the solar industry, are now entering the electrolyser sector, reshaping the dynamics of the domestic market.

Recent industry surveys indicate that, as of November 2023, Peric Hydrogen, Longi, and Sungrow lead the market share rankings, collectively holding 70% of China's domestic market. The noteworthy expansion of production capacities among these key players signals an inevitable intensification of competition within China's domestic market in 2024 and beyond. Consequently, many Chinese electrolyser producers are exploring opportunities in the international green hydrogen market to accommodate their substantial manufacturing capacities.
