On September 2, 2024, Shenzhen Wenshi Hydrogen Technology Co., Ltd. officially won the bid for the global first 1.25MW AEM water electrolysis hydrogen production project, setting a new record for the largest single-system AEM hydrogen production project. This also marks the beginning of megawatt-scale AEM commercialization in China, signaling a new stage for the industrialization of AEM water electrolysis hydrogen production technology.

AEM hydrogen production combines the advantages of alkaline (ALK) and proton exchange membrane (PEM) hydrogen production technologies, using non-precious metal catalysts and nickel-plated stainless steel plates, which lowers component costs. The AEM membrane has high strength, allowing for high-pressure hydrogen production, with fast system start-stop capability, adapting well to fluctuating renewable energy.

This technology ensures high-efficiency, high-purity hydrogen production while significantly reducing costs, making it a promising solution as renewable energy usage rapidly increases.

As the technology matured, AEM products have been widely adopted. Domestically, Wenshi Hydrogen launched 2.5kW and 10kW AEM electrolyzers in 2023, leading the way from technological breakthroughs to product commercialization.

With mature AEM technology and industrial-scale anion membrane production, Wenshi Hydrogen successfully won the bid for this China Southern Power Grid project, accelerating the commercialization of AEM hydrogen production and ushering in a new era of large-scale, low-cost green hydrogen production in China.

Looking at the global development of AEM hydrogen technology, China has surpassed international competitors, with the domestic AEM market rapidly heating up. Wenshi Hydrogen has built a complete technical system in four core areas: membranes, catalysts, membrane electrodes, and control systems. High-power AEM devices with single-stack capacities of 250kW and 1MW are ready for delivery. As China advances its dual-carbon goals and global energy structures evolve, the golden age of AEM hydrogen technology is approaching.
