TOKYO, JAPAN – ATLANTA, GA — IHI Corporation and GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) announced that they have successfully completed a test demonstrating 100% ammonia combustion in GE Vernova’s F-class gas turbines. The emissions recorded during testing are consistent with the companies’ development plans as they work toward fully ammonia-powered gas turbines, targeting commercial availability by 2030.
The test took place at IHI’s specially designed facility, which was built to simulate the real-world operating conditions of GE Vernova’s F-class turbines.
Ammonia is already widely used in industrial sectors, particularly in fertilizer manufacturing. It also serves as an efficient and cost-effective medium for transporting and storing hydrogen. Additionally, ammonia is being explored as a carbon-free fuel for power generation. Because it contains no carbon, its combustion does not produce carbon dioxide, supporting efforts to reduce emissions in the energy sector. However, even when using carbon-free fuels, combustion with air can still produce trace amounts of CO₂ due to its presence in the atmosphere.
