Fortescue Metals, a big mining company in Australia, has successfully run one of its large trucks on hydrogen fuel cells
Industry newsOn Thursday, the company shared that their new hydrogen-powered truck, called "Europa," has been tested and works on hydrogen. This truck was developed with help from Liebherr and includes a large battery (1.6MWh) made by Fortescue WAE and 500 kilowatts of fuel cells. The truck can hold more than 380 kilograms of liquid hydrogen.
CEO Dino Otranto said they are very excited to have Europa working on hydrogen after the success of their electric truck prototype. He called it a big step towards having a fleet of trucks that don't produce emissions by the decade's end.
Fortescue plans to move Europa to their mining sites soon for more testing. The results from these tests will help decide the future of their zero-emission trucks developed with Liebherr.
The company has also started receiving the first T 264 diesel-electric trucks, which they will convert to zero-emission trucks. They have tested their 240-tonne electric truck, "Road Runner," on various terrains and conditions.
In addition, Fortescue is replacing its diesel-powered excavators with electric ones, which are more efficient. This change will save 95 million liters of diesel each year. These excavators are partly powered by solar energy from a nearby 60 MW solar farm and will eventually be fully powered by renewable energy as Fortescue builds more solar and battery facilities.
